Some shipyards are shifting their focus on the research and development of new energy-powered ships and energy saving and environmental protection devices to boost maritime environmental protection.
"We are striving to explore the market of high-end and green energy-powered ship types, such as LNG dual-fuel tankers, methanol dual-fuel tankers and hybrid ships. We are also taking into account the design of a new type of PCTC vessels to meet the rising demand for the transportation of electric vehicles for export," said Li Hao, manager of international business operation department of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Guangzhou Shipyard Co., Ltd.
Clarkson's Newbuilding Price Index, a barometer of price changes in newly built ships, stood at 170.91 points in June, up 5.8 percent from a year earlier.
"Since January 2021, the average cost of building various types of vessels has increased by nearly 30 percent. The recovery of the shipping market is a main reason for such a rise, which has been amplified by rising labor costs and the elimination of outdated production capacity," said Huang Liunan, senior researcher on energy and chemical markets from Guotai Junan Futures Research Institute.
